UBC School of Journalism, Writing, and Media presents “Decolonize THIS (media),” a special talk featuring 2020 UBC Asper Visiting Professor and award-winning journalist, Angela Sterritt and moderated by UBC Associate Professor, Dr. Candis Callison.
For two decades, journalist and author Angela Sterritt has focussed her coverage on sharing impactful stories on the lives, communities, and injustices of Indigenous people. Her career has taken her to Dene territory in Yellowknife where she covered land claims and forest fires, to the oil sands in Fort Chipewyan, to outside a bank in Vancouver where a Heiltsuk family was racially profiled.
More recently she has explored the ways in which bias or impartiality is situated for journalists. What is considered neutral when we live in a society that was and continues to be shaped by colonialization? Sterritt aspires to reveal a cultural partiality in Canada and stir thoughts about our unconscious worldviews. She will share highlights of a reckoning we are seeing in media to address imbalances and look at the risks involved for those who push to seek change.
Sterritt’s column Reconcile THIS (CBC Vancouver) explores the tensions between Indigenous people and institutions has won several awards.
This event is co-sponsored by the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies.
