We are delighted to highlight the work of Christine D’Onofrio, Associate Professor of Teaching, Chair of the Bachelor of Media Studies program, and Director of Digital Scholarship in Arts at UBC, whose curatorial work recently took to the streets of Vancouver.
Ripples was a public art project consisting of a series of billboards installed along the Arbutus Greenway in Vancouver, as part of a City of Vancouver public art initiative, running until late November 2025. D’Onofrio served as the project’s curator, collaborating with artist Sydney Hart and researcher Gavin Fridell of Saint Mary’s University.
The project examined how we understand and visualize data on the environmental impact of global trade. By translating large economic and ecological datasets into striking public visuals accessible to anyone walking or cycling along the Greenway, Ripples enhanced the community’s perspectives on the underlying factors that shape everyday life.
It’s a powerful example of what media studies is all about: taking difficult, important ideas and finding creative ways to put them in front of people, literally, in this case, at billboard scale.
