The BMS is delighted to celebrate a remarkable stretch of scholarship from Dr. Richard Cavell, Professor of English and Co-Founder of the Bachelor of Media Studies program. Richard has recently published two significant works at the intersection of media theory, anthropology, and literary studies. Mediatic Shakespeare: The Dynamics of Orality, Script and Print in the Plays and Poems (University of Toronto Press, 2025) explores how Shakespeare navigated one of history’s great media transitions, from oral tradition to print. The Explorations of Edmund Snow Carpenter: Anthropology Upside Down (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2024) recovers the story of Edmund Snow Carpenter, the renegade anthropologist who, influenced by Marshall McLuhan, helped establish intellectual groundwork for media studies. The book on Carpenter has since been recognized with the Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book in the Field of Media Ecology, presented by the Media Ecology Association at their 2025 convention. Dr. Cavell’s achievements are a wonderful reminder of the depth of scholarship that shapes this program, and we couldn’t be prouder to share this news with you.
