Leaving the Program

Students in the Bachelor of Media Studies may find that their study plans change throughout their time at UBC. You may find that your intended area of specialization has changed, or you want to pursue a different area of study after trying electives in a new subject. You may find that you need to take some time off for academic or personal reasons. Whatever the case, you should visit Arts Academic Advising and the BMS program manager to discuss the options available to you.

If you are…

  • Applying to another program in the Faculty of Arts (BA, BFA, BMus, BIE): You are required to email and inform the program assistant about your plans prior to registration for the upcoming Winter session.
  • Taking a semester or year off: BMS students who wish to take a year of academic leave must first withdraw from the BMS and apply to enter the BA program. Because of the way the BMS program is designed, students must complete the Core Courses together as a cohort. There is no guarantee that there will be a seat in the cohort in the year that you choose to return to UBC. If you leave the Faculty of Arts at UBC in good academic standing (that means you haven’t been asked to leave) you can take an Academic Leave of one academic year and still have eligibility to register in the following Winter Session when you return.
  • Facing unexpected financial, health, or other personal circumstances that may affect your studies: Please contact the program manager as soon as possible.
