BMS Supplemental Application Form

Welcome to the supplemental application portal for the Bachelor of Media Studies (BMS) Program at UBC Vancouver. We look forward to reviewing your recent work and getting an impression of your creative and scholarly processes in order to imagine how you might contribute to our unique, interdisciplinary program.

Please follow instructions carefully to complete your application. The application requirements invite you to highlight your strongest work with depth and thoughtfulness. All applicants must submit a supplemental portfolio to be considered for entry into the BMS. The supplemental application is reviewed by the BMS Admissions Committee, comprised of faculty members who teach in the program.

This application form will automatically guide you to submit all required components; full instructions are available on the program website, and, once you've entered your email address, you may save and continue at any time to pick your application back up, so long as you submit the full application by the deadline.

Before proceeding to the media objects and written response submissions, please tell us a little about your admission pathway.

The BMS offers two admission pathways: admission to Year 1 of the program for students without extensive media studies experience at the post-secondary level, and Year 2 entry for students who have met the Foundational Preparatory Coursework requirement.

As a student with previous postsecondary experience, you may qualify for Year 2 entry; if you do not meet the Foundational Preparatory Coursework requirement, you may still be considered for admission to Year 1 of the four-year program.

How you qualify for Year 2 entry depends on where you are currently pursuing post-secondary studies. The following fields are filtered based on your previous submission.

To meet the 9-credit minimum, you can put forward up to five separate courses—totalling no more than 12 credits—for consideration. You will need to upload a PDF of the syllabus for each course. Students currently studying in BC should only put forward courses that do not have specific correspondence established in the BC Transfer guide.

Note that 1 credit at UBC is equivalent to 2 credits under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Please upload the syllabus in PDF form for each course. Ideally, this would include a week-by-week plan of the topics and assignments throughout the semester.

The Bachelor of Media Studies is an interdisciplinary program that integrates theory with practice. Submission of a candidate’s original media work for consideration by the Admissions Committee is a critical component of the supplemental application. Candidates must submit two self-produced works of media -discrete original works to reflect upon individually, not a portfolio. The jury of this interdisciplinary program looks for candidates capable of engaging in a variety of forms. We ask that candidates submit work in two different mediums to showcase their best work.

Examples of different media types you can include in your portfolio are:

- Scholarly writing (academic essay, report, media analysis, etc)
- Creative writing (poetry, fiction, screenwriting, game narrative, etc)
- Journalism (article, documentary visual essay, editorial, interview, etc)
- 2D visuals (painting, photography, graphics, etc)
- 3D Visuals (sculpture, 3D models, etc)
- Moving/Time Based Image (film/video, animation, etc)
- Interactive Works (XR, games, interactive storytelling, responsive web-sites, physical computing, etc)
- Data Visualizations (infographics, interactive data, etc)
- Audio (podcasts, soundtracks, etc)

You will upload each media object individually. Ensure you submit two different media types. As an interdisciplinary program, we understand that one media example may contain two different types of media production (ie. you wrote an original screenplay and produced it into a film) in which case, please indicate that you are encompassing two media outputs in the same object.

In addition to uploading your work itself, you'll provide details regarding its specifications, along with additional information to help the evaluation committee focus on the parts you wish to emphasize. Review the program website for additional information and recommendations when curating your portfolio.

The fields for this section are identical to the previous; it is advantageous, but not mandatory, to select different types of media for each of your two object submissions. Ensure you do not submit the same object twice.

The written component of the supplemental application is used by the Admissions Committee to assess your ability to analyze and think critically about media production.

I understand that UBC will be required to share personal information about me with the members of the admissions committee as a part of the application process. I agree that my personal information may be sent to individuals aside from the Program Manager. Such personal information may include:
