About the Events:

What to Expect Sessions: Led by a BMS student host, learn what to expect in every year of BMS during this virtual academic semester and have your questions answered from how classes will look, how community involvement will continue, to how opportunities after graduation will look like! You will also have the opportunity to engage with some of your professors and peers directly!

Year 1: This session is for incoming students entirely new to the BMS program! Students will get an introduction to the BMS program, learn about the various opportunities within BMS, and have the chance to engage with some of your professors and peers. Students will be able to get their questions answered, as well as see a brief course overview for the upcoming year. This is an opportunity to get a head-start in both the BMS program and UBC life!

Year 2: This session is for incoming 2nd year students in the BMS program. On top of engaging with their instructors to get an introduction to their core courses, students will learn about the Arts Co-Op and study abroad opportunities that are available to them. This is an opportunity to see how BMS students can take advantage of their degree!

Year 3: This session is for incoming 3rd year students in the BMS program. In addition to getting introductions to their core courses from instructors, students will receive tips on how to prepare for their open second semester, as well as how to stay connected!

Year 4+: This session is for incoming students in their fourth year, fifth year or final yearCome and talk about graduation, scholarships, grants and opportunities to boost your portfolios. We’ll also be talking about resources for applying to grad school and looking for jobs after you graduate. Students will be able to connect together, chat with their professors, and get lots of information about what their final or fourth year will be like during the COVID-19 pandemic.

UBC BMS Media Art Fest: Don’t miss out on the opportunity to showcase your media art work, and see the works of your peers! This one-hour live stream will feature work from all years across the BMS program and explore the theme of “searching”. As we navigate the tumultuous time together, this short-curated festival reveals concepts of memory, justice, and re-situating ourselves into a new context, through pieces of media art, including videography, photography, digital photo, animation, and sound art.

Do you want to submit your work to the Media Art Fest? Here are the submission requirements: Video art only, maximum 8 minutes long, 16:9 or 9:16 aspect ratio and .mp4 file extension. Please send your work directly to angelica.poversky@ubc.ca. If you have any questions, please also contact Angelica.

Get to Know UBC MSSA and Beacon: Journal of Media Studies: There are many ways through which you can get involved with our own BMS community! At this session, you’ll get to know the UBC Media Studies Student Association (MSSA) and Beacon: Journal of Media Studies. During this newly designed year, there will still be many opportunities for students to get their work published, and also to connect and co-produce with their cohort. Find out more at this event!

UBC Arts and Culture Horizons: Get to know all about the UBC Arts and Culture District, student clubs, and the Museum of Anthropology, Belkin Art Gallery, Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, Barnett Hall, Dorothy Somerset Studio Theatre, Hatch Gallery, MAS and AHVA art gallery, where student-led dialogues, exhibits, art sales and performances will be hosted digitally throughout the year. Also get to know how to engage with the broader Vancouver community!

All Years Wrap-Up Party:  Come on out for a virtual student-only (BMS students of all years) Wrap-Up party of the Bachelor of Media Studies Welcome Week on Zoom. There will be UBC and Media Studies trivia, speed-connecting, open mic, and there will be games and prizes too!
