Title: Virtual Performance Desktop Compositions

Virtual Performance Desktop Compositions

This talk features a live desktop performance of oscillating video and sound fragments, using the material qualities of loops and transitions as a tool for reshuffling patterns - exploring rhythms of movement and stasis, and what it means to move forward.

HP Parmley (b.1988, Ireland/Canada) is a London-based artist who works with video, sound and live performance. Leaning into the space of poetics and humour found in the everyday, she collects fragments of daily life, building new narratives through rhythm, arrangement and composition. Finding meaning that emerges from an unravelling, she is interested in a dream logic where the sensory and the sublingual become sites of potential for new forms of communication. She completed a BFA at Vancouver’s University of British Columbia in 2011 before an MFA in Fine Art Media at London’s Slade School of Fine Art in 2013. She has since exhibited across the UK and has completed residences in Istanbul, Slovenia, Switzerland, Arizona and online. She is a contributing editor for online art magazine AQNB and will be a resident at RUPERT, Lithuania in 2020. She was recently awarded the 2020/21 FLAMIN Fellowship, a major scheme supporting early career filmmakers based in the UK.

The Media Studies program is excited to present Spark, a series of virtual talks on Zoom featuring inspiring local artists, scholars, and performers in the field of media studies! This intimate and interactive series will spark your imagination, spark new perspectives, and spark important dialogues in the ever evolving and diverse discipline that is media. Each talk will be followed with a Q&A segment where you will have the opportunity to ask the speakers your questions.

With each talk's theme connected to Media Studies in its unique way, you'll have the exclusive opportunity to discover, and see how the theory and knowledge you have learned,  and are continuing to learn in your courses impact, contribute, and change the world.

This event series is free, but please RSVP for HP Parmley’s talk through the form below by Monday, January 11th, 2021 to retrieve your Zoom link to attend.
