Media Studies Student Association

The Media Studies Student Association (MSSA) aims to foster a community in the Bachelor of Media Studies program. The MSSA showcases the diversity of our students, and provides opportunities for personal, professional, and academic growth. By connecting with organizations involved in new media, we can inform about the unique BMS program and support students through their journey.

MSSA Executive Board 2020 – 2021

The MSSA holds annual general meetings once a year in March to elect new members of the executive board. BMS students are encouraged to attend the MSSA annual general meeting to stay informed on issues throughout the media studies community at UBC.

As President, Kelly acts as a liaison to the Student Administrative Commission (SAC), calls general meetings, and chairs executive meetings among the MSSA board. Kelly also books representatives for MSSA, and represents MSSA during internal and external connections both on campus and outside the university.

Reason for Joining MSSA

  • Create change and shine spotlights on the students
  • Create connection with the industry and provide diverse resources to the students

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Digital Communication, and how one can utilize mediums to deliver the message effectively to the public in the current and future media landscape

As Vice President, Tess acts in the president’s stead, including working with and supervising fellow executive committee members on individual projects.

Reason for Joining MSSA

  • Help foster a meaningful community within the BMS program across the different year levels, and help create a space for BMS students to interact outside of class

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Interests lie in media theory, politics, social justice, and law

As VP Internal,  Emily liaises between all the executives, coordinates meetings among the executive board while managing the meeting schedule. During meetings, Emily also keeps a record of meeting minutes for future reference.

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Media Theory
  • Art history, sociology, and justice movements

As VP Marketing, Katie manages MSSA’s social media channels, schedules posts, and strategizes ways to increase online engagement and reach. Katie also designs promotional materials for MSSA news, events, and announcements.

  • To create a community with the BMS cohorts and engage with people of all talents

Personal Interests in Media Studies 

  • Data analytics, digital marketing, film production, technology, Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies

As VP Events, Ariel works with all the logistics and planning for the social events hosted for the BMS students and staff. Ariel also collaborates with all the executives to come up with ideas for the events that MSSA wants to host.

  • Help bring all cohorts together to allow students to connect and become a more close knit community

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Design, technology, and UX design

As VP Communications, Ananya acts as MSSA’s point of contact for all external issues such as communicating with BMS program staff, potential speakers or guests for events. Ananya also  maintains MSSA’s presence on campus and interacts with other clubs.

  • Meet other students from different cohorts in the BMS program
  • Make an impact on the BMS community on campus

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Creative work such as drawing comics

As Treasurer, Maria acts as a liaison between the Finance Commission, and acts as a booking representative for MSSA. Maria is also the sole singing officer for MSSA, and keeps track of club finances.

Reason for Joining MSSA

  • Passionate about program and wanted to exercise financial management skills in a real-life setting as a Media Studies and Masters of Management dual degree student
  • Wants everyone in the program to feel as if it is working for them and their future and as if it is open and receptive to adapting to students’ needs and wants over time

As AUS Representative, Naomi attends the AUS weekly meetings, and reports back to the MSSA executives at their weekly executive meeting to be sure both parties – AUS and MSSA – are up to date on MSSA’s current and future plans throughout the year.

Reason for Joining MSSA

  • Be more involved with the BMS program and interact with a wide scope of students within Media Studies
  • Drive towards choices that will benefit BMS students and create a sense of community for all

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Photography, music, and the arts

As a First Year Representative, Tiffany serves as a liaison between the BMS first-year cohort and the executive team of the MSSA. She is also responsible for informing the first year students of any events and opportunities relevant to Media Studies throughout the academic year.

Reason for Joining MSSA

  • To bring students of the Bachelor Media Studies program together, especially the first years
  • To make everyone feel included and part of a family and to ensure that the first-year students of BMS are heard and represented

Personal Interests in Media Studies

  • Listening to podcasts and watching movies

As a Marketing Assistant, Evens works closely with the VP Marketing and assists with creating graphic designs and social media posts for event promotion. She also gathers content for the MSSA newsletter and provides ideas for marketing initiatives.

Reasons for Joining MSSA

  • Get further involved in BMS to build stronger connections within the program and help in fostering a sense of community within Media Studies at UBC
  • Build marketing skills and practice existing passion for graphic design in a formal setting and creating content that brings BMS students together

  • Filmmaking, photography and design
  • Asian studies and creative writing
