Hiring for Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Position

Three UTA I: Undergraduate Teaching Assistant positions (3 positions @ 192 hours each) are available for the following (MDIA) courses:

MDIA 100 “Media Objects” (Term 1)

The number of hours and available positions are approximate and subject to change due to funding and enrolment.

Qualifications: Applicants are required to have experience in multidisciplinary approaches and a well-rounded competence in using digital tools for media purposes. A core component of the course, candidates must bring an enthusiasm for bringing various disciplinary approaches into practice through the discovery and analysis of a multitude of media objects and technologies. Upper-level undergraduate students that are multidisciplinary media knowledge holders are prioritized eligible candidates for the role. Working with the lead faculty member, teaching assistants work directly with students in active learning labs, and will therefore have an aptitude for leading groups, on the spot problem solving, facilitating experiences, public speaking, assessing needs and taking initiative. Teaching and leadership experience is an asset.

Duties: Preparing, teaching and facilitating lab class time, grading, assisting students in practical exercises, consultation towards development of individual media projects, conducting discussion and feedback sessions. Skilled in handling digital files, digital imaging and computer problem solving. Ability to apply historical, contemporary and use knowledge of media apparatus, software and their effects. Teaching Assistants will also assist students in learning vocabulary and skills necessary for engaging with a wide variety of media, expand or facilitate questions in connection to key concepts of lecture.

Hours of work: Attendance at lectures is required. A full teaching assistantship involves leading 2 small lab sections, office hours, grading, student correspondence, record keeping, training, preparation and team meetings for a total of 192 hours for the winter session (September 1 to December 31, 2023).

Salary: The salary for undergraduate teaching assistantship will be calculated on a pro-rata basis, for more detail please see the CUPE 2278 Salary Guide, updated here. A precise schedule of duties, training, and hour allocation will be arranged with the course instructor.

Schedule: Please see (https://courses.students.ubc.ca/cs/courseschedule?pname=subjarea) under Courses for scheduled lecture and lab times. Lab times can range between 9:00 am – 8:00 pm. Students must be in British Columbia by the start date of a TA assignment in order to hold the appointment
