From ideas of representation in the media, the importance of digital media literacy education, having a critical/analytical eye when viewing media, to all the ways that media is intertwined in our lives, our five BMS Speech Contestant Finalists this year each uniquely responded with their ‘M-DEAS’ (ideas about media) at the first M-DEA Talk: UBC Bachelor of Media Studies Public Speaking Competition on April 6th to the topic – What should Media mean to us?
Their speeches promoted thought-provoking perspectives and discussions through incorporating a combination of scholarly research works, media theory, and lived experiences.
After two years of virtual studies, it was also wonderful to bring together students together in-person and celebrate our learning for this academic year!
We want to congratulate all the contestants for their amazing speeches, and thank Dr. Biz Nijdam, Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez, and Tim Flanagan (Judging Panel), BMS Peer & Academic Mentors, and everyone who contributed to the success of this inaugural event!
