Alongside completing a minor in art history, Tiffany Huang is in her final year of the Bachelor of Media Studies and Master of Management program. Her passion lies ultimately in connecting people through storytelling. From writing a novel and composing piano songs, to creating films and information visualizations, her love of storytelling stretches across multiple media. Below are some of Tiffany’s works.
Bouquet of Light | A Series of 3 Original Classical Piano Songs
From the author: Bouquet of Light is a series of three original classical piano songs that was released on YouTube and further published in the inaugural issue of Beacon, UBC’s peer and faculty-reviewed Journal of Media Studies. Each represented by a different cover image that I edited myself, the three songs are respectively titled “Out of the Ordinary,” “Flowers and Candles” and “Bouquet of Light.” All pieces were composed individually before I decided to combine them into a series.
When considering them in juxtaposition, it became clear to me that they mapped a progression of how I have dealt with emotions over the past couple of years. Whereas “Out of the Ordinary” is evocative of escapism, “Flowers and Candles” revolves around quieting or releasing such emotions. Finally, “Bouquet of Light” constitutes an attempt to finally confront one’s emotions and engage in self-reflection.
Sweet Dreams | Suspenseful Short Film
Made in collaboration with Bryan Lee, Ileana Soza, Kristin Chuk, Sakura Tominaga and Valiant Chan in Introduction to Film and Media Production (FIPR 133).
From the author: Sweet Dreams follows the story of Caden, a young man who longs for a solution to his challenges with having selective mutism. What appears to be a temporary coping mechanism, however, turns out to be disastrous for his entire community. Alongside coming up with the overall concept of the story, I further took on the roles of screenwriter, producer, script supervisor and actress.
Drinking Water Advisories for First Nation Communities | Website and Information Visualizations
From the author: Made in collaboration with Rachel Lau and Avril Hwang in INFO 419, Information Visualization, this website is completed with interactive information visualizations and details the drinking water advisory crisis in First Nations communities in Canada. My particular role was to actualize the interactive maps.
Since the data on short and long term drinking water advisories had been located on two different websites of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), the goal of our visualizations was to unify the disparate datasets provided by the Canadian government. It is significant to note that the data we collected is only representative of drinking water advisories in First Nations communities south of the 60th parallel north. There remains online a lack of publicly accessible data about Indigenous communities north of 60.
