Go Where Your Passion Takes You
Tianna Tso shares about her many accomplishments before and during her time at UBC, and how she has used her personal interests to support her creative academic endeavors.
Why BMS?
Each Bachelor of Media Studies (BMS) student brings their unique background and vantage point to the program—Tianna Tso is no exception. When Tianna was trying to decide what and where she wanted to study, several items impacted her arrival at the University of British Columbia.
At a young age Tianna developed both a competitive and high-achieving spirit. This may have started on the volleyball court, as she played club volleyball during secondary school, but it was solidified when her Communications Technology course entered their stop motion film into the Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival.
While only in Grade 11 in a competition dominated by college and university students, Tianna and her team won second place in the competition.
Life at UBC
Once accepted into the Bachelor of Media Studies program at UBC, Tianna felt at home pretty quickly. Early on she realized she wanted to minor in Sociology because she was inspired by the connections she kept noticing between her courses in Media Studies and Sociology.
By her first summer, Tianna continued to look for ways to combine her interests and found a great summer internship on her own—as the Marketing and Communications Intern for the Ontario Volleyball Association. In her element, Tianna was creating volleyball related media content on a daily basis, including assets shared through their Instagram feed, such as these:

When Tianna returned to campus for her second year, she went on to work for the UBC Sustainability Initiative as part of the UBC Work Study Program. One of Tianna’s particular projects focused on sustainability during the winter holidays and included minimalist icons such as the following:

In both of these social media positions Tianna has not just created the content, but provided important analytics to determine which social media efforts prove the most lucrative.

Where to Now?
As you can see, Tianna is always looking for the next opportunity to put her media skills into practice. This summer Tianna will be on her first UBC Co-op term where she has the exciting challenge of helping West Coast SCI Physiotherapy become a leader in physiotherapy in the Greater Vancouver Area. Tianna brings her skills in media, analytics, athletics and social networking to this position. We look forward to seeing what she gets up to this summer and in her future years in the Bachelor of Media Studies Program.
